Grade 8 / Mathematics (6 - 8)
Welcome to Grades 6 - 8 Mathematics Program!
The program uses a progressive-style approach to teach mathematics. We use an interactive online curriculum called Illustrative Mathematics from Kendall Hunt (https://im.kendallhunt.com/MS/index.html). Students use their knowledge to discover and learn new topics.
Students can accelerate to complete Algebra 1 Regents in 8th grade. These students will complete both 7th and 8th grade topics in Illustrative Math in their 7th grade. During 8th grade, we complete eMATHinstruction Algebra 1 N-Gen Standards (https://www.emathinstruction.com/courses/common-core-algebra-i/ ) curriculum. At the end of the year, they will take the Algebra 1 Regents exam. This will give students an advantage in high school, as they can enter into Geometry in their Freshman year.
For additional practice, we use online programs DeltaMath (https://www.deltamath.com/) and Khan Academy (https://www.khanacademy.org/). The goal is for students to get 100% complete. Students may need to answer more problems than others, which is okay. Students can learn at their own pace. The purpose is to practice, practice, and practice!

- Calculator: scientific or graphing calculator (Ti-83+) **
- 2 Reams of paper for the printer (all class notes will be printed, no textbook)
- 1 box of tissues
- Loose-Leaf and/or graphing paper: available to use at home, not needed for daily class
- Access to the internet
- A “Can-Do-It” Mindset

** Note: Students will only need one of the calculators listed above. However, learning how to operate a graphing calculator will help students with future regents and SAT tests. Other calculators are acceptable, but refer to the approved calculator list for the SAT (https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10/taking-the-tests/test-day-checklist/approved-calculators). Students taking Algebra 1 should have a graphing calculator.
